The County of Fairfax, Virginia, through its Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, Maintenance & Stormwater Management Division (MSMD) is responsible for the maintenance of approximately 1300 stormwater ponds. Funding for this work is through Fund 125 for Stormwater Services, which has a current overall annual budget of approximately $40 million.
SMC was awarded a contract to provide annual maintenance for approximately 1300 of these facilities. Operated from our location in the Capital Area, the work includes routine mowing, trash and debris management, removal of sediments, and related services. Work also includes maintenance of 60 large regional facilities and state-regulated dams and maintenance of approximately 100 underground facilities. Reporting requirements include documentation of maintenance activities with third party maintenance verification inspections.
As part of the routine maintenance operations, SMC crews assist in the identification and correction of issues that may be outside of typical routine maintenance. These include one-time repairs that can range from minor erosion to significant reconstruction activities. As some of the infrastructure was constructed a number of years ago, lifecycle issues such as sediment cleanouts and barrel lining, are required. SWM’s wide range of capabilities adds value by developing creative construction solutions in a streamlined manner.
