SMC’s next Employee Spotlight shines on an extraordinary Heavy Equipment Operator in our Field Operations Department – Ron Ruby.

In 2018, Ron joined SMC as a junior operator, drawn to the environmental construction field to do meaningful work to save the Chesapeake Bay, and seeing the opportunity for growth that SMC offers our field crews. Over the last five years, he has grown through our company, working his way up the ranks now as one of our leading heavy equipment operators in the firm, and has proven to be a very dependable asset to our team as he is eager to learn and always seeking smarter ways to complete his day-to-day tasks. Ron likes that his position offers all sorts of unique aspects and variety to his work day – one day can be spent loading trucks – another day he finds himself in the middle of a pond surrounded by mud. He says he finds himself in a variety of situations that require quick thinking, and that he draws inspiration from his fellow colleagues – Superintendent, Bruce Bowman and Senior Operator, Russell Hubbe. As we shine a spotlight on the phenomenal people in our company, we have found that many of our crews have built a strong bond and that makes our company very proud as this cohesiveness really produces lasting results for our clients and creates a fun atmosphere for our SMC family to work in.

Ron is from Middle River, Maryland, and enjoys spending time with his family, and boating and commercial crabbing on the weekends. This interest transcends into Ron donating his time to the State of Maryland and DNR to carry out ghost crab pot clean up and removal efforts, gathering crab pots either lost and left behind by crabbers or cut off by other boats, and in return making our bay a cleaner place for all to enjoy.
